egg hunt 2008

It's cold and rainy here today, so the Piatt County egg hunt was moved to the middle school gym. Oh....I'm sorry.....did I say egg hunt? Yea, that's what they call it. But it's really more of a storm and gather type of event.

They fill the floor with gifts (oddly there aren't even that many eggs!) and the children storm the floor on the count of 3. They have different age groups so that the 12 year olds don't trample the 2 year olds, but they should probably have a 30 and older group as well. It was sad really to watch several mom's yelling at their 4 year olds to "bring that here!" "grab that one too!" They would stand along the side of the gym floor and have their child bring them the larger toys so that they could go back in and gather more. But then there were the other parents who just sent their child out with a 30 gallon garbage bag so they could scoop up anything in their path.

Hannah choose to just sit and watch. Olivia casually walked the floor and was choosy in the few things she decided to pick up. There was one box set of horse stuff that she was disappointed about not getting - another kid beat her to it. :(

At first I felt bad she wasn't getting that much and then I was proud that she wasn't running about like a crazy person grabbing everything she could get her hands on. As we watched them fill the floor with toys for the 7-9 year olds, I leaned over to Kelly and said, "and we wonder why our society is over indulgent."

After the last group gathered their candy and prizes, they had drawings for bigger prizes. Olivia was bummed that her name didn't get called. But, as Kelly pointed out earlier in the event - we have 12 more years of this! :)

It is hard to believe that parents go to such extremes to make sure their children get as mucah as they can, I agree, you should be proud of Olivia for not being that way - Kelly and Lisa, you are doing a great job as parents.

My, what a day, it must have gotten pretty wild, I can see why Hannah didn't go in there!! Glad to hear you weren't jumping and hollering at the side lines, ha. I hope Olivia got a few things she liked.
